The Cluster Renewable Energy Hamburg honors outstanding innovations and personal commitment to renewables with the “German Renewables Award”. An independent jury awards the winners in four categories: Product innovation of the year, Project of the year, Student Work of the Year Renewable Energy and Lifetime Renewable Energy.
The project received the “Product innovation of the year” award, where the Robotics & Automation Group research AI and Deep Learning models for semantic segmentation in order to detect corrosion on critical structures.
The research is a core component in the automatic corrosion detection process on offshore platforms together with SEMCO Maritime. The output from the models is used in a bigger pipeline for automatic corrosion management software for the offshore industry.
Great results are already seen very early in the research project, in the trained models, and the data the group is receiving from offshore platforms.
Associate Professor Simon Bøgh is leading the AI research and working close together with Research Assistant Andreea-Emilia Ciontos who is bringing her expertise in Deep Learning and Computer Vision into the project.
